Dr. Qiang Chen obtained primary medical qualifications and cardiothoracic training in China. In 1993, after qualified as an attending Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing University he went overseas for Postgraduate Fellowship in Cardiothoracic Surgery. He was trained at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Prince Henry Hospital & Prince of Wales Hospital in Australia, and Wellington Hospital in New Zealand, between 1993 and 1999. He came to England in 1999 and pursued an academic career in cardiac surgery at the Southampton University Hospital. He was awarded a PhD degree from the Portsmouth University, England, for his investigation in leucodepletion technique and its strategic application in cardiac surgery. From 2002, he continued his advanced cardiac surgical career at the Bristol Heart Institute and the Bristol Royal Hospital for Children. He is the cardiac surgical lead for Cardiac Human Factors and Risk Management (CHARM) program at the Bristol University Simulation Centre. Clinically, he specialized in pediatric and adult congenital cardiac surgery, and adult acquired cardiac surgery. He has special interest in minimally invasive cardiac procedures and performed first pulmonary valve replacement without using the heart-lung machine in human in the UK. He is senior clinical fellow in cardiac surgery at the University College of London. He was awarded honorary editorial board member of Chinese Clinical Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery in 1999. He is the viewer of European Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery. |
