Biography of Lingyun (Lily) Wu, MD. PhD.

Dr. Lily Wu is a full Professor of Department of Health Sciences at the Lakehead University. Dr. Wu comes to Thunder Bay from the University of Saskatchewan where she was a tenured full Professor in the College of Medicine’s Department of Pharmacology and a Leader of the Cardiovascular Research Group composed of sixteen full-time faculty members and four associate members from the Colleges of Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Pharmacy and Nutrition, Agriculture and Bioresources, and the School of Public Health.


Dr. Wu’s research interest is on the mechanisms of insulin resistance and its prevention and treatment. Among her many seminal discoveries are the role of methylglyoxal in the development of hypertension and diabetes, the regulation of hypertension and diabetes development by hydrogen sulfide, and the modulation of  ion channels by endogenous substances.  Dr. Wu has published 122 peer-reviewed papers, including Science, J. Clin. Invest., PNAS, and Diabetes. She has delivered more than 45 invited talks as a plenary speaker at national and international conferences. Her research activities have been supported by multiple funding agencies, such as Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.

 

Dr. Wu has won numerous awards, including CIHR New Investigator Award (2002-2007) and Young Investigator Award from the Canadian Hypertension Society (2003). She received the Alumni Award of Excellence from University of Alberta in 2004 and the Merck Frost Junior Scientist Award from the Pharmacology Society of Canada in 2005. Also in 2005, Dr. Wu was honoured with the YWCA's Women of Distinction Award in Science and Innovation (Saskatoon, Saskatchewan). To crown her research achievement, the University of Saskatchewan honored Dr. Wu with the Distinguished Researcher Award in its fall convocation (2005). In 2006, Dr. Wu received the J.A.F. Stevenson Visiting Professorship award from the Canadian Physiology Society and the 2006 Graduate Mentor of Year form College of Medicine (U of SK).
