The Bethune Medical Development Award

The Bethune Medical Development Award is named after a well-known Canadian surgeon, Dr. Norman Bethune (Chinese name: 白求恩). Dr. Norman Bethune died in 1939 in China during World War II when helping Chinese against Japanese invasion. He became a national hero in China and the reference standard for international altruism.

The aims and objectives of award are to recognize and encourage the achievements of building the cross-cultural bridge between China and Canada in the fields of patient care, hospital management, disease prevention and medical research internationally.

The first candidates were awarded at the first 8th BMDAC anniversary in 2018 in Toronto, Canada. Each winner received an award including a trophy together with a certificate granted by Bethune Medical Development Association of Canada.

Awardees from China:

Award presenter: Dr. James Swan, President of the Ontario Association of Cardiologists. Awardees:

Award presenter: Mr. Aihua Li, President of the Bank of China in Canada.
Awardees:
1. McGill University: Dr. Dominique Shum-Tim, Heart Institute of Montreal University. Dr. Dominique Shum-Tim performed more than 100 cases of cardiac surgery for free in China. He was praised as the “contemporary Bethune” by dedicating pre-scheduled travel time to demonstrate difficult operations and treating patients with critical conditions. He also established a full scholarship at McGill University for Chinese cardiac surgeons to study in Canada, laying the foundation for more China-Canada medical exchanges.
2. Montreal University: Mr. Eric Laliberté, Chief Perfusionist at the Montreal Heart Institute of Montreal University.
