Speech from Dr. Dominique Shum-Tim, VP of BMDAC at First Annual Gala of the Three Stars(By the MUHC foundation)
April 21, 2017: Distinguished guests, Generous donors, Ladies and Gentlemen, Good evening! First of all, I would like to welcome you all, and thank you all for attending this first annual Gala of the Three Stars. It is a great honor to have you among us tonight. One of the purposes for this fund raising event is to make the MUHC a hospital associated with our Chinese community in Montreal. I don't wish anyone of you in this room to require my medical expertise, but if you do or if you have friends and families who will require any medical advice, or opinion, my door will always be open. I will do my best to better serve you. I was specifically told by the organizer to keep my speech very brief and I believe I have barely few minutes. I have been thinking very hard of what I can say in this short period of time, I decided to dedicate most of this time to thank many of the "unsung heroes" here tonight. We had barely 4 months to put this Gala together and it required many hours of hard work, and dedication from these volunteers to put this all together. Thanks to these people behind the scene, because we won't be here without their sacrifice. There are also many people in the audience including my family, my patients, my first patient I operated as a staff and many others who supported me through my career, surgical residents, nurses and many friends I have met for the first time tonight. Without your support and encouragement, I would have never been able to do what I have done in China. I would have never touched upon so many life by performing open heart surgery on those 97 patients over the past 8 years. Tonight, the MUHC foundation, some of the leaders from the Chinese community like yourself, and some of our Canadian friends continue to support part of my mission in China and now extended it back home, to support our colleagues and patients in China. These people, these supports, ladies and gentlemen, deserves a round of applause! I would also like to use this occasion to welcome and thank my personal friend General Consul Peng. Through your support, I have had the unique opportunity to sit at the same table as the Prime minister of China Mr. Li Keqiang during his visit to Canada last year. And through you, I have had the honor of meeting the ambassadors of China, in person, over the past few years, to discuss our plan and wisdom of collaboration between Canada and China. For a Chinese Canadian born in Africa, these privileges are as honorable as the name bestowed upon me by some of my Chinese colleagues and patients "Contemporary Norman Bethune" Last but not least, tonight I am very touched and glad to see many young people and new generation volunteered their precious time to organize this event. For them, I have few words of wisdom to share with you. 1) No matter what background, what profession, what achievement you have in your life, do not forget to be "Humble". I always teach my residents, "when you think you are the best and you know it all, that's the day you stop learning, that's the day you stop improving as a surgeon and as an individual." 2) No matter what your background is, to achieve something, you have to have a long-term "Vision". Over 2000 years ago, our ancestor knew the importance of building the Great Wall of China, We know through history, without it, China would not have existed today, we would not have been here today. There is no vision, there is no future. That was true 2000 years ago, it is still true today. 3) Learn to give back to the society and our community, because that is the most noble thing you can do in your life. At the end of the day, the only legacy you can leave behind is the respect and example you have given to the others. Thank you and enjoy your night!
